With its spiral staircase, grand piano, signature cocktails and fairy-lit terrace, the Berkeley has a dash of continental style although the pub grub menu is more middle-of-the-road than highway to the stars. The choice is extensive: favourite dishes include BBQ chicken melt (£8.65), chicken tikka karahi and beef, bacon and red pie. Burgers and grills are also menu fixtures: steaks are matured for 35 days, and the 7oz beef burgers are served in a brioche bun. Smoked haddock fishcakes (£8.25), seafood linguine, pulled pork potato wedges and Cumberland sausage and mash also feature in the crowd-pleasing line-up. If you choose one of the dishes under 500 calories - aubergine bake or cajun chicken salad, perhaps - then we reckon you have dispensation to go for the Monday-Friday 2-for-1 dessert offer.
