What we say
We have lavished praise on Colman's in the past for the way they have embraced the difficult issues involved in sustainability. In 2010 they picked up the inaugural Good Catch Award for best environmental practices '“ the latest in a long list of prizes for their pioneering work. In their restaurant a detailed mini-menu '“ packed with information for diners - sets out their procurement policy which includes locally caught fish from named boats, Icelandic cod, line caught haddock and MSC certified pollock. Salmon is no longer offered so that all fish at Colman's are now wild caught but we are concerned that turbot remains on the online menu '“ though Colman's assure us that it is no longer served and has been replaced by MSC-certified hake. Similarly the king prawn dish would perhaps be better described as Thai-style prawns as they are in fact Dublin Bay prawns. They haveÂ assured us thatÂ this is how it will appearÂ on the future menu which is due to be produced in line with theÂ approachingÂ restaurant expansion. Colman's already had a creditable three Blue Fish score but with their latest raft of improvements '“ providing they are all fully implemented '“ they move up to 4.5 Blue Fish, ranking it with some of the best restaurants in the country.

To ensure that our fish suppliers are aware of our deternimation to fulfil this procurement criteria we insist that they write to us confirming that the fish products supplied to our takeaway and restaurant are sourced from a sustainable stock. We also seek full traceability of our Fish and Seafoods.
A traditional but very serious fish and chips restaurant which has occupied the same site overlooking the sea for more than 80 years. Founded as a beach hut in 1905 it has been in the same family for four generations and is rightly proud of its history and achievements which include a UK TV Food Hero award, Fish and Chip Shop of the Year and Best takeaway.
An extra large cod with all the trimmings costs £12.95; a special seafood platter costs £14.95.
