After several decades, the Grecian Taverna still packs in the punters who come for Greek specialities such as kebabs, moussaka (made with ‘best mince’), stifado with rice (£12.50) and kleftiko, roasted lamb shank with oregano, spices and roasties. Online reviews, however, range from ‘family favourite’ to ‘never again’.
In accordance with Plymouth tradition, they also serve dishes such as steaks and chicken flamed in brandy, and scallops cooked in tomatoes and cream (£16.95). Other traditional English choices include prawn cocktail (£4.95) and avocado vinaigrette, followed by chicken chasseur, tournedos Rossini or grilled Dover sole (£18.95). The vegetarian selection is limited: vegetable kebab, vegetable moussaka or mushroom stroganoff (£9.95). The weekday two course set menu is very reasonably priced at £9.95 with a wide choice that includes chilled melon, gammon steak and profiteroles.
